Now let me give you a full review of Abyss where with the magic of Abyss the viewers transports into a world where beauty, fate, and destiny intertwine in the most unexpected ways possible.

Overview of Abyss

Abyss k-drama posterGo Se Yeon is a prosecution lawyer who is very pretty and she always boasts about it. She has a guy best friend called Cha Min, a rich heir of a cosmetic empire but not so attractive at all. He is smart and intelligent and loved Se Yeon so much but she always rejected her because of his looks. One day unfortunately he meets with an accident and dies but some supernatural beings revive him with a magical thing called Abyss. Abyss has the power to reincarnate people but only with their inner appearance. Mystically that night someone brutally kills Go Se Yeon. And now with the Abyss Cha Min brings Go Se Yeon back to life. In this section, I will give you a proper idea about the main characters of this drama highlighting the strong chemistry between them.

Go Se-Yeon (Played by Park Bo-Young)

Go Se Yeon is a charismatic prosecutor and a determined person who is especially known for her intelligence as well as her beauty. She is such a positive kind of person but her only fault is she judges people by their appearance. After her death her friend uses Abyss and reincarnates her, she gets a new body and new look which is nothing in comparison to her previous self.

She loses her looks for sure but her intelligence is still the same. Though it sounds so simple; being murdered and then being reincarnated, sounds so easy right? But think about those who don’t even get it why people will kill them. It was shocking as well as a vulnerable moment of Go Se Yeon’s life yet she goes to the end of it to find out her murderous and his reason for it. Her witty, intelligent and a super confident persona makes her a standout character and her character’s growth reflects the themes of self-discovery and acceptance of this drama.

Cha Min (Played by Ahn Hyo-Seop)

Cha Min is the best friend of Go Se Yeon, he is a very simple man. He is humble to everyone, he is the sole heir of a renowned beauty company yet he works so hard. From his young age, he has loved Go Se Yeon but for her looks, Se Yeon never looks at her in a romantic way which always hurts him but he can’t help but love her so dearly.

He is the first man who was reincarnated by the Abyss and when he reincarnates his appearance completely changes because of his inner beauty. He becomes a fine handsome man who can make anyone fall for him. His personality of being modest and caring remains unchanged, as well as his love for Go Se Yeon. His inner beauty still overshines his outer beauty. As previously he has a socially unattractive body he struggles a little with his new appearance. Ultimately he grows into a confident version of Cha Min leaving the timid one.

The Evolution of Their Dynamics

Man and woman discover glowing orb.

Go Se Yeon and Cha Min have been friends for many years and they know each other very well. Their new journey started with mutual respect and the Go Se Yeon murder mystery brought them even closer and they knew each other’s vulnerability and affection. As they became friends to lovers their relationship was quite sweet and playful. Some scenes of their interaction give a good comic relief which makes their relationship feel authentic.

Their trust in each other is so commendable which reflects on their teamwork. Together they face so many challenges and solve some unsolved puzzles, also they prove their love and change the rules of destiny which proves the purity of their love. Together they unfold the mystery of the magical Abyss. The way they rely on each other is the strength of their dynamics and it keeps the viewers engaged with the story till the end.

Themes Explored in Abyss

This drama deals with some significant themes of life, which are

  • Inner beauty vs Outer beauty
  • Life, death and second chance
  • Love and acceptance.

When the characters of the drama die and reincarnate they change into a person with a different body and look. Their faces change according to their personality, especially how they think. In a simple sentence, their inner beauty affects their outer beauty. As we see Cha Min before his reincarnation was not so attractive according to the social standards but his heart was pure, when he comes back to life he becomes very handsome. And for Go Se Yeon she loses her beauty because she was not beautiful by heart. Life, Death and second chances are some of the most significant themes of this drama. Human life is so precious, but we can not always live the best life. It would have been so nice if we actually could get a second chance. Anyways, in Abyss the characters die and with a special power, they get a second chance. Some of them use it as their opportunity to right their previous wrongdoings and some of them become more evil. Finally, through the characters’ growth they accept their changes and love each other and themselves in the purest ways.

Abyss is a drama that contains one of the most unique plots ever in the Kdrama world. Now let’s specifically point out the strengths of this drama;

  •  Unique and Intriguing Concept: The drama concept is so thought-provoking as it introduces an idea of death and reincarnation that is based on a person’s inner beauty. The drama is designed so craftily that it serves a captivating plot that derives the story forward and explores deeper themes as well.
  • Engaging Lead Performances: Both Park Bo Young and Ahn Hyo Seop did a very good job in portraying their roles of Go Se Yeon and Cha Min. Park Bo Young shines with her charisma and performs the role of the intelligent prosecutor Go Se Yeon. On the other hand, Ahn Hyo Seop’s innocent facial features worked for him which shows the humble nature of his inner beauty.

The chemistry between the two leads is naturally enjoyable and heartwarming which engages the leads with the viewers.

  • A Perfect Blend of Genres: The drama Abyss is a fusion of different genres like fantasy, romance, suspense and humor. In some scenes, the viewer is compelled to be serious and in others, you will laugh like a fool which makes this drama beautiful.

The villains give solid stress and enhance the drama’s tension and stakes. The other supporting actors are a source of comedy and humor. Together they contribute significantly to the growth of the characters, and plot, adding humor, depth to the emotions, and complexity.

Abyss is a must-watch for those who always look for something new, something different. The concept, the idea, and even the story presentation are unique. However, in the first scene, you will find the drama a fictional drama that includes magic in it but in a deeper sense it gives a heartfelt message of accepting ourselves. The drama Abyss shows what truly matters in life, such as love, trust, inner beauty and a second chance. The unique characters, the plot twists, and the chemistry between the leads make the drama enjoyable from the beginning to the end.

If I tell you about my own experience then I have to tell you I was not expecting this drama to be this good. I started the drama just because Ahn Hyo Seop and Park Bo Young, because both of them are my favorites and I wanted to see how their chemistry works. But guess what! This whole drama became one of my favorites. It left an unforgettable impression on me. So I will suggest you to start watching Abyss if you want something new, even if not then start this drama if you like fantasy drama. Even without the deeper message, you will like it just like a mere fantasy drama too. That’s all for today.
