Character Development & Performances
Part 2 has almost a similar cast to part 1, but in this part, their character grew finely. All of them became stronger than ever both physically and mentally, especially mentally. The supporting characters also did a very good job that put an extra layer on the storyline. But we are going to talk about the prominent characters. Let’s see how their character developed.
Van (Kim Nam Gil) – The Tormented Warrior
Van is the heart of the story of Island and in part two he continues to be so with his stellar performance. He carries the burden of his tragic past and is determined to protect Mi Ho at any cost. As he is half-human and half-demon he struggles between what to do and what not to do and this inner struggle makes him one of the most appealing characters of the drama. In this part, his character develops as he becomes ready to sacrifice himself for the sake of humanity and Mi Ho.
As Van, Kim Nam Gil delivers a powerful performance and effortlessly balances Van’s physical strength and emotional vulnerability.
Won Mi Ho (Lee Da Hee) – Embracing Her Destiny
Won Mi Ho of part 1 and part 2 are completely two different selves of Wom Mi Ho. As in part one she appears as an ordinary woman who finds herself in the most unfortunate and unexpected situation of her life. She is followed by some demons who want to kill her. She doesn’t even know why those creatures are attacking her. She was completely clueless and was protected by Johan and Van. But in part 2 we see her in a completely different personality. She found out the reason why all the bad things were happening to her. From being an ordinary girl she turns into the most important and most powerful protector and healer of humanity. She is the one who can stop all the dark powers who are harmful to the world. She gets to know her past and awakens her power through hard training. Her fear has now become her strength.
Lee Da Hee masterfully portrayed the character of Won Mi Ho and presented both determination and emotional depth to the story. The relationship between Van and Mi Ho becomes more complex in part 2.
Johan/Yohan (Cha Eun Woo) – A Struggle Between Duty and Emotion
Priest Johan is one of the prominent characters of Island. In part 1 we get introduced to him as an exorcist who is childish too but in part, he shines brighter. Johan is sent to Jeju as a protector of Mi Ho but he has another mission too. He is here to find his brother. However, he has his own internal conflict both as a priest and a fighter. In part 1 we see him disliking Van because he knew him as a demon but in this part, his attachment with both Van and Mi Ho grows. He ultimately let go of his past trauma and fully focused on the fight against demons. He becomes more serious than ever.
In this drama, we see the lover boy Cha Eun Woo in a most serious and mature form as he goes beyond his usual charismatic persona and delivers something out of the box. He successfully portrays Johan’s strength, depth, pain and resilience.
Goong Tan (Sung Joon) – A Villain with Depth?
Goong Tan is the villain of the drama who appears as a terrifying force in part 1 but his story unfolds more in part 2. In this part we get to know him more, his motivation, his pain, his revenge and everything. Here Goong Tan becomes more darker and aggressive but somewhere his story leaves room for sympathy.
Sung Joon makes Goong Tan one of the most remarkable villains of all time with his performance. His screen time with Van is more intense than any other scene.
Major Plot Twists & Cliffhangers
Part 1 introduces us to the storyline, themes, characters and others but Part 2 expands everything and includes more shocking twists and turns. Let’s break down some of them.
Shocking Revelation About Mi-Ho’s True Power
In part 1 we see the demons are following Mi Ho everywhere to kill her but she is being protected by Van and Johan. In the end we discover that Mi Ho is not just an ordinary human being, rather she is the healer of humanity. In part 2 we get to know more about her and her past self as well as her divine powers. In her past life she was Wonjeong who drew the barrier of the island that protects Jeju from evils. Her past connection with Van affects her relationship with both Van and Johan. Things get complicated between Mi Ho and Van.
Van vs. Goong Tan – The Ultimate Showdown
The final battle between Van and Goong Tan is one of the most intense moments of Island Part 2. Once they used to be brothers and the most trusted person for each other but now things have totally changed. The brothers became rivals and Goong Tan is pushing van to his limits by forcing him to embrace his demonic side. The question is, does Van succeed in defeating Goong Tan or something unexpected happens? Now it’s your turn to find out the question.
Johan’s Fate – A Heartbreaking Sacrifice?
Like Mi Ho, Johan also had an unexpected turn in his character. We knew him as a priest who fights with evil as an exorcist in the previous part but the most unexpected twist we get at the end of the drama. We see him summoning his supernatural power as soon as he takes off his earring and his eyes start glowing. He became stronger than ever but something about him is not clear. Anyway his relationship with Van and Mi Ho grows and this also causes him internal conflict as now he must choose between his duty and his growing attachment to Van and Mi Ho.
The Ending – A Satisfying Conclusion or Another Cliffhanger?
The ending is satisfying yet not so satisfying. Because at the end of the battle some mysteries are still unsolved. But the satisfying thing is that the good won the battle against the bad. Jeju is now sealed and free from evil. But what about Van? He too was a half-demon, remember? I know what you are thinking, Van finishes at the end but what excites the fans is there is an open ending that suggests a possibility of future seasons and Van’s comeback as well.
Both part one and part two deal with the same theme but part two delivers a more thrilling and more action-packed plot that depends on the emotions intensely. With the mind-blasting twists and turns, strong character development and intense fighting sequence Island Part 2 successfully managed to keep the viewers hooked until the very end. The whole cast, especially Kim Nam Gil, Lee Da Hee, Cha Eun Woo and Sung Joon, brightly shine in their particular roles. They masterfully made this dark fantasy drama even more immersive.
Obviously, there are some fan debates on the pacing issue, the unsolved questions and the open ending but all of them accepted the fact that the plot idea is so fresh and the cast did even better to make this drama remarkable. As I am talking about the cast then I have to say I never imagined the serious nature of Cha Eun Woo, because I am so used to the lover boy Cha Eun Woo. I was totally surprised and I wish to see him more in this type of role.
At the end, I want to say Island, both part one and two are undeniable must-watch for the fantasy lovers and also if your genre is horror Island is a gift to you. And if you are worrying about the ending, then who knows maybe we can get one more season!
So, what do you say? Are you ready to be captivated in the world of mythology and breathtaking visuals and ready to witness the fight between good and evil? Let me know. Thank You.
